Tips for Getting Your Website to the Top of Search Engine Results

I was doing some research on search engines and found this information from Google very enlightening:

"If your pages haven't been indexed yet, it's probably because there aren't enough other pages on the web that link to them. Google looks at the link interconnectedness among pages, relying on the vastness and openness of the Internet to yield the most relevant search results. If other pages don't link to yours, we can't assign your pages a PageRank (our proprietary measure of a page's importance) in a reasonable way. Once other pages point to them, we'll pick your pages up."

"If you are having difficulty getting listed in the Google index, you may want to consider submitting your site to Yahoo! or Netscape. You can submit to Yahoo! by visiting http://docs.yahoo.com/info/suggest. You can submit your site to Netscape's Open Directory Project (DMOZ) by visiting www.dmoz.org. Once your site is included in either of these directories, Google will often index your site within six to eight weeks."

For more information, visit http://www.google.com/addurl.html.

Bottom line: the more pages that link to you, the higher your score and the higher you are in the results list.

As a first step, make sure your website is listed in the WebNetwork, Info Line's listing of area nonprofit websites, at infolineinc.org/websites.htm

Week Without Violence ...
October 17 through October 23, 2004

YWCA of Summit County will observe the 9th Annual Week Without Violence with a “Meet the Candidates” night followed by “Take Back the Night” March and Rally. The week will honor local supporters of victims’ rights including Deb Lemire, Epitome Magazine, Morris Office Environments, Judge Unruh, Petracca Realty and the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner program at the DOVE Unit of St. Thomas Hospital. The week long, nation-wide campaign highlights practical, sustainable alternatives to violence in our homes, schools, places of work and communities.

“Violence against women is not just a women’s issue, it is a people issue. Violence effects 1 in 3 women which in turn effects 1 in 3 families,” said Jennifer Brown, YWCA Rape Crisis Program Director. “YWCAs nationwide use this week to specifically empower women to say NO to violence, and YES to safe homes, schools and communities.”

Amy's PC TIP:
Keep E-mail Organized with Followup Flags

Do you have trouble keeping track of all the e-mail messages that need your attention? Sometimes, in the clutter of all the messages that come in over the course of a day, it’s easy to lose track of that message you got last week that you were supposed to respond to by today.  If you use Microsoft Outlook, here’s a handy tool that will make it easier to keep track of messages that require further action.

  1. In your Outlook Inbox, there is a column header that looks like a little flag (P).  In 2003, it’s off to the right; in all other versions, it is typically on the left.  (Note: if you have customized your Inbox view, this column may not be visible – see instructions at the end if your flag column is missing.)
  2. Right click on a message that requires follow up action and choose Flag for Follow Up. (In 2003, choose Add Reminder). Note: If you open a message in its own window, click the flag button on the toolbar.
  3. The Flag for Follow Up dialog box will appear.
    1. Choose an action from the drop-down list.  Among the choices are: follow up, call, do not forward (good for sensitive messages), reply, etc.
    2. Set a reminder date and time.  This way, Outlook will pop up a reminder box (just like for your appointments) that reminds you to take whatever action you chose for that message.
    3. Click OK.
  4. Once you have completed the action, right click on the flag and select Flag Complete.  The flag will turn white, and if you open the message, the header will tell you when you completed the follow up on this message.

Now you can get back to all of your messages when you intended to, and look fabulously organized to all of your contacts!

Bonus feature: In Outlook 2003, you can flag an action completed with a single left click on the flag itself.  The flag will be replaced with a checkmark, and the message header will display the follow up date and time.  Outlook 2003 also allows you to choose different flag colors, and the navigation pane contains a link labeled For Follow Up, which automatically filters your mailbox for just those messages which were assigned flags, grouping them by color.

No Flags? If your follow up column is missing: Right click in the column header area and select Customize Current View.  In the popup box, select All Mail Fields from the drop down list.  Select Flag Status and click Add.  Use the Move Up/Move Down buttons to specify where the column will display.  Click OK twice, and you should see your flag column.
