We are pleased to announce that Amy Rock has joined Project Connect as a Trainer & Support Technician. This position was made available when Lynnette Sieradzki was promoted to HMIS Administrator at Info Line.
Amy comes from Prime ProData, where she trained users in their customized software and answered the technical support hotline. She has extremely strong administrative and customer relations skills and is sure to be a really good resource for your technical support questions. She is currently working on completing her Master's degree in GIS at the University of Akron, where her husband works.

Cleveland Connection Stops Free Website Hosting November 30th
If you are relying on Cleveland Live's free website hosting as your only presence on the internet, it's time to think of some alternatives.
According to a recent e-mail, "Community Connection Web site hosting will not be available after November 30, 2003. Until then, your current sites will continue to be displayed at their present URLs, and you can still update and maintain them using the existing tools."
If you are searching for hosting alternatives, TechSoup has some excellent resources. Visit www.techsoup.org and select the /Service Directory\ tab. Along the left, you will find a link to "Web Hosting Companies." They have a list which can help you narrow down your choices.
On a side note, Project Connect is launching a Website Developers Series starting December 3rd. Classes include Website Development & Management; FrontPage 1, 2, and 3; and PhotoShop: Graphics for the Web. Be sure to register early!

Would you like to help your local school receive unexpected funding to benefit students? For the fifth year, Summit Education Initiative (SEI) is giving away money—up to $20,000—to the stars of Summit County school-community partnerships.
Nominations are now being accepted for the fifth annual Celebrate the Stars: Partners in Education Awards. The awards recognize partnerships among Summit County schools and individuals, businesses and organizations that have significantly contributed to improving student achievement. Public, private, parochial and charter schools are all eligible, and self-nominations are accepted.
Grants ranging from $500 to $2,500 will be awarded to “Stars” in five categories: (1) Business or Community Organization (2) Parent, Grandparent, Guardian or Foster Parent Volunteers (3) Individual Community Volunteers (4) Teachers and (5) Students. Grant funds are provided to the schools involved in the partnership.
You are encouraged to nominate yourself or someone else in one of the above categories. You probably know more than one person who is deserving of an award: Does your business have a partnership with a local Summit County school? Do you or someone you know volunteer within a Summit County school to help make a difference in education? Do you know a high school junior or senior who stands out in his or her involvement within the Summit County community?

Completed applications must be postmarked no later than Friday, Dec. 5, 2003. Winners will be recognized at a celebration event on Thursday, March 4, 2004 at St. Joseph Family Center in Akron.

Women's Network, a division of the YWCA of Summit County, will be hosting a Network After Five event on Thursday, November 20, 2003, from 5-7 p.m. at the Quaker Square Crowne Plaza Hotel located at 135 South Broadway in downtown Akron. The special guest speaker will be Stephanie Roberts from Channel 5 News and Weather. She will speak about the challenges she has faced in the male-dominated world of news reporting, the efforts she has made to blend her high stress profession with her busy personal life, and the importance of effectively selling yourself and your abilities in a competitive market.
This wine and hot hors d'oeurves reception is complimentary for Women's Network members. There will be a $5 charge for nonmembers. Plan on bringing a guest, a stack of business cards and a question or two for Stephanie. The evening includes a holiday door prize drawing.

One of the most common reasons for computer crashes are filthy CPU's ... and the garbage is inside as well as out! Once a month, or at a minimum once a quarter, you should give your computer a good, thorough cleansing.

Computers 2: Increasing Your Efficiency
Outside:
- Buy a can of compressed air and spray your keyboard and CPU when turned off.
- DO NOT USE GLASS CLEANER ON YOUR MONITOR! It will destroy the anti-glare coating. For desktop monitors, use only rubbing alcohol on a soft cloth. For laptop monitors, use water on a soft cloth … not dripping!
- Clean your mouse. Take it apart. Clean the ball and rollers with alcohol.
- Replace your mouse pad every 3-6 months or when it becomes noticeably dirty.
Inside:
- Go to Start/Find/Files or Folders… and find all files named *.tmp in the c: drive. Press [CTRL +A] to select all of them and then push the [Delete] key.
- Open Internet Explorer (or your web browser. Click on the menu Tools/Internet Options. Click on the Delete Files button under the section called Temporary Internet files. Be sure to also check the box to delete all offline content.
- Empty your Recycle Bin.
- Go to Start/Programs/ Accessories/
System Tools/ Disk Cleanup … Make sure C: drive is selected and click [OK]. The computer will calculate…be patient! Check off all files to delete. Click [OK]. - Go to Start/Programs/ Accessories/
System Tools/ Scandisk … Make sure C: drive is selected and click [OK]. This will ensure that your file structure and the files themselves do not have any problems. A Standard scandisk is usually enough. The Thorough scandisk option takes a really long time and it is a redundant check if you are going to run Disk Defragmenter. - Go to Start/Programs/ Accessories/
System Tools/ Disk Defragmenter … Make sure C: drive is selected and click [OK]. This will ensure eliminate all those ugly spaces on your hard disk and put your files together in a logical order so that your computer will run faster and better. Defrag monthly even if the system does not recommend it. Even if your drive says it is only 2 or 3% fragmented, that could be a large amount if your hard drive is 20 gig or more. You can click [Show Details] to see what it is doing and [Legend] to see what types of sectors are being moved. Never stop a defrag in the middle! The computer might be in the middle of moving a file and it could become corrupt.
