You Set Our Workshop Schedule!

The faxing workshop was so successful (ok, it didn't run, but at least you were interested!!!) that we are thinking of offering more 2-hour mini-workshops. Unlike the regular half-day sessions, these will be down-and-dirty, learn the how-to's, and then get-out-of-here-and-do-it-yourself (with full access to the technical support hotline, of course!). These would cost $20 for members, $35 for non-members and be very specific as to what will be covered.

So click here or visit infolineinc.org/connect.htm to take our survey pick the topics you would be interested in attending if we offered it. And don't forget to suggest your own topics!! No commitments are implied!!

For Executive Directors and Program Managers ...
Making Technology Work For You

September 23, 2003 - 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Greater Columbus Convention Center
400 North High Street Columbus, Ohio

FREE to anyone 70 miles outside of Columbus ... That means us!!!

Project Connect and OANO are joining with NPower to host Technology Summit 2003. This one-day seminar will inspire and educate nonprofit management about the potential of technology as a mission-support tool. The summit will explore technology tools and topics that can directly and immediately impact the way your organization delivers services. You will leave feeling empowered to put technology to work for your mission!

For many nonprofits, computers and basic information technologies are an integral part of everyday operations. And yet, many of us have yet to fully realize the impact technology can have on service delivery. At the Nonprofit Technology Summit, NPower trainers, facilitators, consultants, and invited special guests will bring you examples of how other nonprofits organizations, in your region and around the country, are harnessing the power of technology to meet both their organizational and programmatic needs.

Join us as we learn new strategies for technology use, network with peers, consult with experts, explore technology tools, and connect with helpful resources! We will challenge and encourage you to apply what you learn and provide you with tools to transform what you learn into action.

Workshop topics include:

  • Inspiring Change: What Does Technology Innovation Look Like?
  • Online Fundraising: Innovations & Best Practices
  • Getting a Solid Start: Strategic Technology Planning with Online Tools
  • Picture This: Using Mapping Software To Show, Study And Refine Your Services Delivery
  • Preparation, Planning & Peace of Mind: Disaster Planning for Nonprofits
  • Working Together Virtually: Using Simple, Low-Cost Collaboration Technologies
  • Keeping Track: Data Collection Systems for Nonprofits
  • Calling for Reinforcements: When, Why & How to Work with Tech Consultants & Volunteers
  • Tools that Matter: The Potential of the Internet to Impact Service Delivery
  • Clip Your Strings: Exploring Wireless Technology
  • Reality Check: Rethinking our Approach to Technology Funding
  • Investing in People: How Staff Technology Training can Leverage the Full Potential of Technology
  • Bringing it Home: Transferring Knowledge into Action

Cost is only $50 per person ... and anyone who works 70 miles or more from Columbus can attend for free!!! A nearby Red Roof Inn is offering rooms at $70, so this is definitely well worth your investment!!

This summit is sponsored by AT&T.

WANTED: Used but Useful Computers

Two major projects are in need of donated computers. If you know of anyone who has the following, please direct them to us!!

Child Care Connection, a program of Info Line, is placing donated computers in the homes of 25 child care providers in low-income neighborhoods. The focus of the program is to improve nutrition and school readiness for the children they care for. Donated computers should be Pentium 1 or higher with 128 MB RAM and be equipped with a CD ROM drive and a sound card.

Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Ohio & Kentucky is in need of 4 computers for its new intern program. Donations should be Pentium 2/ 400MHZ or higher with at least 128 MB RAM.

ACORN Still Offers Free Internet Access, Discontinuing E-Mail Service

The ACORN service offered by the Akron-Summit County Public Library will be changing slightly. While we will continue to offer free, dial-up Internet access to Summit County residents, we are phasing out the e-mail portion of the service. We recommend that users switch to any of the many free, e-mail services available on the Internet, such as Hotmail (www.hotmail.com) or Yahoo! (www.yahoo.com). Beginning October 1, instead of connecting to www.acorn.net to access your e-mail, you will connect to your e-mail site of choice.

Need help or have questions? Please call ACORN at the library at 330-643-9145 or attend one of two classes designed to help users make the switch to a new e-mail service:

  • Thursday, September 4 Kenmore Branch Library 2:00
  • Monday, September 15 Ellet Branch Library 2:00

Did you know ...

AOL and some other text-based e-mail services often translate gorgeous pages like this into ugly code-intensive gibberish that no one wants to read. But I found a workaround ... at least for AOL. So, if you send out e-mail newsletters to your donors, clients, volunteers, etc. ...

PC TIP #15
Outlook 2002

When sending a web page, HTML newsletter, or formatted announcement through e-mail, include it also as an attachment as well as in the body of your e-mail. If you do so, subscribers to AOL will be able to see the gorgeous formatting!!
