Workshop Announcement:
FCC Faxing Regulations: What You Can & Cannot Do
Wednesday, August 27, 2:00 - 3:30 PM

The Federal Communications Commission has published new rules that will severely limit nonprofits’ ability to communicate with their members, the public, and the media by fax. These new rules will take effect by August 25. Nonprofits not in compliance may face fines of more than $10,000.

To help you plan for these new changes, The Center for Nonprofit Excellence, OANO, and Project Connect are sponsoring a workshop on August 27 from 2:00 - 3:30. It will be facilitated by Jennifer Campbell, Director of Public Policy for OANO.

This program will teach nonprofits what they need to do to be in compliance with the new rules and provide participants with sample forms to use. The program is limited to the first 40 people who register. This program is essential for any organization that communicates by fax with members, the media, elected officials or the public in general.

Cost is $20 for members of Project Connect or OANO;  $35 for non-members. To register, send an e-mail to or call 330-315-1335.

The Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations has some excellent material about this: They also have a sample consent form you can use: We've posted a Word version of it at Remember that we are doing this as a public service and are not representing this as a guarantee that it meets the FCC rules.

The FCC rules includes banning the faxing of consent forms, so if you fax, get those consent forms out now ... and don't forget to sign the consent form from Project Connect and send it back to us!!

Direct from Microsoft: Security Bulletin ...

It has been widely reported in the press and on Microsoft's own web site, that on July 16th a critical security bulletin (MS03-026) and a patch regarding a vulnerability in the Windows operating system was released. If you were not aware of this bulletin and corresponding patch, take a moment to go to   to find out if you are running an affected version of the Windows operating system and get the specific information as to what you need to do to apply this patch.

Although Microsoft encourages you to pay attention to all security bulletins and to deploy patches in a timely manner, they are calling special attention to this particular instance because it increases the likelihood of the exploitation of this vulnerability. Specifically, code has been published on several web sites that would allow someone to spread a worm/virus that takes advantage of the vulnerability in question thereby impacting your computing environment.

In order to minimize the risks of such vulnerabilities to your computing environment, Microsoft encourages you to subscribe to the Windows Update service by going to and also subscribe to Microsoft's security notification service. By subscribing to these two services, Microsoft will automatically send information on the latest software updates and the latest security notifications thereby improving the likelihood that your computing environment will be safe from worms and viruses that occur.

Women's Network Joins YWCA

Women’s Network, an organization dedicated to women helping women is now a division of the YWCA of Summit County – known for its mission to end racial and gender discrimination.

With the combined strength of these two organizations, women of Northeast Ohio will have a greater opportunity to tackle many of the challenging issues confronting women today including pay equity, the advancement of women in the workplace, racism and violence against women. By supporting this merger, we will be contributing to such programs as the Judith Resnik Scholarship that reaches young women pursuing non-traditional careers in math, science and engineering; and the Women of Achievement program, the only one of its kind in the area that fully recognizes the accomplishments of local women. Members are also encouraged to participate in a broad range of networking programs designed to enhance personal and professional growth.

Get involved! If you would like more information, or are interested in becoming a member or renewing your membership with Women’s Network, contact Sheila Hershberger, Women’s Network, Office Supervisor, at 330-379-2772. Or drop in to see their new offices at the Central YWCA at 670 W. Exchange Street, Akron, 44302. All members of Women’s Network also receive the added benefits of YWCA membership.

CNE Publishes Consultant & Service Provider Survey

The Center for Nonprofit Excellence is developing a resource center that will include a database of providers of consulting, technical assistance and training services. CNE will not recommend particular consultants to nonprofit organizations that request names of consultants. Instead they will provide several names of possible consultants, etc., as well as information regarding how to select and work with consultants and trainers. It will be the nonprofit organization’s responsibility to select and contract with the consultant/trainer.

If you are aware of any consultants, trainers, service providers, etc., who could be included in the database, please direct them to, where they can select the Consultant & Trainer Survey.

If you have any questions about the project, please contact CNE's Program Manager, Susan Griffin, at 330-762-9670 or e-mail her at .

Beth Little Joins Project Connect

We are pleased to announce that Beth Little has joined Project Connect as a Trainer and Support Technician. This position was made available when Lynnette Sieradzki was promoted to HMIS Administrator at Info Line.

Beth was previously a technical instructor for Accelerated Computer Training (ACT!), a division of the Akron Public Schools. Before that, she was with Project Transition of Oakland, CA, where she taught computer applications to “welfare-to-work” participants and website design at Computer College Silicon Valley.

Beth brings strong website skills: she was a web developer for Microsoft and the Gale Group. We are really looking forward to strengthening this program for Project Connect.

Please feel free to contact Beth at or 330-315-1335.
