WITAN Announces Grant Opportunity

The Civic Committee of WITAN, Women In Touch with Akron's Needs, is now accepting requests for applications for funding from Akron area nonprofit service agencies. Requests for grant proposal forms will be accepted through Sept. 15. Interested nonprofit organizations may request applications by contacting Leslie Kissel, director, WITAN Civic Committee, 464 Portage Path, Akron, OH 44303, or by calling (330) 864-8344.

Lynnette Sieradzki is Promoted to HMIS Administrator

Info Line, Inc., has promoted Lynnette Sieradzki to HMIS Administrator. Working collaboratively with nonprofits which provide services to the area’s homeless population, Sieradzki will implement and manage a community database system that allows service providers to collaborate by sharing resource information while protecting client privacy.

Sieradzki previously served as Coordinator/Trainer of Project Connect, Info Line’s nonprofit technology initiative which helps nonprofits to use technology and connectivity to improve mission fulfillment through training, technical support, and one-on-one consulting. She is a resident of Twinsburg.

Since 1983, Info Line has led the nonprofit community in Summit County in integrating technology with service delivery and now operates a state-of-the-art MIS system. As Summit County’s information and referral service, Info Line works closely with all providers of homeless services in the county and has been an active member of the Continuum of Care since its inception as a collaborative.

Swimming for Sharks in Columbus

In a time of scarce resources and increased demands for service, the job of an executive director has never been more challenging. With that in mind, OANO has planned an afternoon program especially for chief executives. Join nationally recognized board development expert Maureen Robinson on July 31 for "Swimming with Sharks: Survival Skills for Nonprofit Executives," an interactive program designed to help nonprofit executives maintain balance and focus in difficult times.

Vision Support Services Earns 3-Year Accreditation

James Lenahan, Executive Director of Vision Support Services of Akron, (formerly known as The Society of the Blind, Akron Center), proudly announces to all affiliated agencies that the agency has been granted a three-year accreditation status by The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

This accreditation reflects the agency's compliance with standards in areas of rehabilitation services to persons with visual impairments.

Since 1913, the agency has provided valuable services to persons with visual disabilities in our community, and the achievement of accreditation will enable the organization to continue its commitment to providing quality services.

CNE Publishes Consultant & Service Provider Survey

The Center for Nonprofit Excellence is developing a resource center that will include a database of providers of consulting, technical assistance and training services. CNE will not recommend particular consultants to nonprofit organizations that request names of consultants. Instead they will provide several names of possible consultants, etc., as well as information regarding how to select and work with consultants and trainers. It will be the nonprofit organization’s responsibility to select and contract with the consultant/trainer.

If you are aware of any consultants, trainers, service providers, etc., who could be included in the database, please direct them to infolineinc.org, where they can select the Consultant & Trainer Survey.

Did you know ...

Each time you visit certain sites on the internet, a small text file is added to your hard drive called a "cookie." Cookies will remember any preferences you select while you are at that site: if you visit the site again, your preferences are remembered. This is helpful when you do online banking or visit your favorite online bookstore.

However, other types of cookies, now have the ability to track a string of websites you may visit and report back to the site owner with information stored as your preferences for advertising additional sites. Free downloads may contain an even more powerful type of cookie called spyware programs. These programs have the ability to download additional files to your PC such as viruses and links to sites you may have never even visited. Some spyware programs have even been known to automatically sign-up visitors to unwanted "adult" websites. Pretty darn frustrating and scary at the same time!

If you have ever visited chat rooms or downloaded free games, music, or other free items from the internet, you may have unintentionally also downloaded a spyware program.

Introduction to Computers 2: Increasing Your Efficiency

• Once a month, while you are doing your regularly scheduled computer clean-up, open Internet Explorer. Select Tools/Internet Options and then click on [Delete Cookies] and [Delete Files]. This will delete the majority of useless files, but not all. It will not delete the majority of spyware programs.
• If you are intent on killing the spyware, you can use a program like Spybot Search & Destroy. To get the program, visit http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=about.  Click on the word Download under the logo at the top of the screen. The website encourages a donation, but you can download the software for free. Just scroll to the bottom of the screen and click on one of the download hosts. Once the software is downloaded to your PC, you will need to follow the directions within the software. There is a tutorial that comes with the program.
  • Remember to keep a link to the original Spybot S&D website in your Favorites folder so you can go back there from time to time and download the updates.

Note: Project Connect and Info Line, Inc., do not endorse any products; we simply provide information as a public service. The Spybot software has been recommended by a number of people on the Circuit Riders listserv.

Some spyware removal programs edit the registry on your PC, so do not download this type of software without researching it first!
