CTF Awards $777,000 to 37 Ohio Organizations
Six area groups share more than $120,000 to provide technology and training.

The Ohio Community Technology Fund (CTF), through funding by SBC Ameritech, delivered $777,453 in grant funding to 37 organizations statewide to help provide technology and training to underserved communities.

Locally, the six organizations in Akron and Ravenna sharing $120,919 in CTF grants demonstrated a commitment to providing low-income or rural communities with access to advanced telecommunications technologies and opportunities to develop essential skills to keep pace with today's rapidly changing technology environment. Grant recipients in the Akron and Ravenna area include:

East Akron Community House will use its $49,658 grant to develop a community technology center with Internet access to provide low-income, neighborhood residents and court-directed troubled youth with access to computer technology and in-depth training.
Akron Community Service Center & Urban League will purchase ten laptop computers with its $9,990 grant to provide offsite, mobile training to seniors, battered and homeless shelter residents, residents in subsidized housing developments, and to other low-income, hard to reach persons who would otherwise be severely limited in their ability to obtain this training.
Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron's Family Resource Center will establish with its $9,971 grant a health and education community outreach project that will foster access through computer technology to Internet-based health information primarily for residents of the low-income urban communities of Akron and Barberton.
Community Support Services received $31,300 to assist young adults with mental illness to actively participate in designing and implementing their treatment plans, and empower all mental health consumers by providing computer and Internet access through a computer learning center operated by behavioral health consumers.
Skeels Improvement Corporation received $10,000 to provide community education classes that will introduce a new form of enhanced rehabilitation to former drug dealers and addicts by teaching basic computer operations, word-processing, desktop publishing and the Internet. Other low-income senior citizens and adults seeking job skills training will also benefit from free computer training classes.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Portage County will use it's $10,000 grant to establish a computer/Internet lab designed to provide youth and adults of disadvantaged backgrounds access to computer technology.

"The organizations receiving these awards provide an important community service, bringing technology and education to disadvantaged communities in Ohio," said SBC Ameritech Ohio President James C. Smith. "We commend the program's grant recipients for their leadership, vision and innovation in achieving this goal."

The CTF has awarded more than $1.5 million in grants since its founding in 1999 as part of the SBC Ameritech merger agreement with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. The remaining grant funds will be awarded later this year by the CTF board, a five-member body comprised of representatives from SBC, the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, Edgemont Neighborhood Coalition, Ohio Consumers' Counsel, and Parkview Areawide Seniors Inc.

CTF grants are funded by SBC and are open to non-profit corporations and associations and publicly funded entities, such as schools and libraries, in SBC Ameritech Ohio's service territory. Coalitions and consortiums of such organizations are also eligible. Additional information, application forms and the complete list of organizations receiving grants in past rounds of funding can be downloaded at www.ctfohio.org or obtained by calling 614-501-1697.
