Coordinating volunteer health services for those most in need ...
Access to health care for uninsured people is a serious problem nationwide and in Summit County, Ohio. There are currently about 69,000 uninsured people in our community who have no regular access to medical care except through hospital emergency rooms. Access to Care is a new, community-based project developed to serve those with the greatest need. The goal of the Access to Care program is to move the uninsured from emergency rooms or not receiving services they need to volunteer primary care providers and specialists supported by the Access to Care network of ancillary services.
This project is an initiative of Healthy Connections Network, a collaborative of local health care providers, local hospitals and other community organizations that have been working to develop this project for nearly four years. Access to Care has received initial funding through a federal grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration and will be opening the program on March 1, 2005.
Program staff are currently recruiting and enrolling volunteer physicians who are willing to accept a limited number of referrals from the Access to Care project and provide needed healthcare services to those individuals. Volunteer physicians will see those patients in their office during regular office hours.
